J.K. Rowling’s Triumph: Scottish ‘Hate Speech’ Law Backfires on First Minister Yousaf

The laws that prohibit hate speech are some of the most dangerous in the world. In Scotland, a law that punishes people who offend someone in a “protected class” has just recently been passed, much to J.K. Rowling’s dismay.

For years, radical transgender activists have been attacking the popular “Harry Potter” author. Many of them have accused her of “hate speech” and even reported her to the police for pointing out some inconvenient facts about male versus female biology.

Rowling has also been the victim of public humiliation and death threats, as we have previously noted. Left-wing activists posted photos of Rowling’s home on social media, including her address, in an attempt to intimidate her. Rowling’s daughter, who is now a teenager, was also targeted by unhinged critics. This prompted Mama Rowling to go nuclear.

After the law was passed, Rowling continued to criticize it, and the Scottish Police announced that Rowling’s statements were not in violation of the new legislation.

Humza Yousaf of Scotland, the First Minister who was instrumental in pushing for the passage of this law, has also been a vocal critic. He agreed that her comments did not amount to criminality, though he believes they are “offensive” and “upsetting”.

It has been reported, in an ironic twist of events, that Yousaf has received more complaints under the new law than Rowling over a speech he made in 2020 complaining about white people in Scotland in positions of power:

It is also understood that several complaints were lodged regarding a speech made by Mr Yousaf as Justice Secretary in which he highlighted white people’s dominance in public roles.

Police Scotland has not only dismissed the complaints but also pledged to investigate each case. There are more complaints about Mr Yousaf, it is believed, than JK Rowling.

Rowling addressed the issue indirectly on Twitter, even though she didn’t directly comment on reports that Yousaf had received more hate crime allegations under the new law than she did.

The majority of Scots are offended and upset by Yousef’s incompetence, and his illiberal authoritarianism. But we don’t lobby to put him behind bars for it.

I don’t think it is right to put people in prison who I disagree with. Yousef’s comeuppance will be at the ballot box.
