Maryland Senate Race Heats Up: Alsobrooks Narrows Gap with Trone Just Days Before Crucial Primary!

Just days before the voters cast their votes, the Democratic primary for an empty Senate seat in Maryland comes down to the wire. This is one of the most tight primaries in the 2024 cycle.

As the race between Rep. David Trone, D-MD and Prince George’s County Angela Alsobrooks deteriorated into some of the most bitter infighting within the Democratic Party ahead of the November elections, the race has attracted national attention. Trone, who received endorsements from leading Democratic leaders in the early stages of the campaign, has been heavily criticized since for a series of controversial remarks, which allowed Alsobrooks to close in on Trone’s initial lead.

A recent poll released by Emerson College/The Hill/DC News Now on Thursday showed Alsobrooks ahead of Trone, 42% to 40%. This puts the two in a virtual tie. The margin of error for the poll is 4.5 percentage points. This survey shows the momentum Alsobrooks has gained in the past few weeks. A Washington Post poll conducted at the end of March showed Trone trailing her by seven points.

Women Vote! a super PAC affiliated with EMILY’s List may benefit Alsobrooks from a last minute ad campaign to attack Trone, just days before the primary election. This is the first outside campaign launched on behalf of Alsobrooks, since Trone dominates the airwaves thanks to his personal fortune.

This ad campaign is a response to the negative tone of recent campaign ads between Trone & Alsobrooks.

Trone, the first to run an attack ad on Alsobrooks featuring comments by a black official from a local community who stated that the Senate was not the place for “training wheel”. Trone removed this line after receiving a complaint signed by over 650 black women.

Alsobrooks, on the other hand, has targeted Trone’s wealth by referring to the millions of dollars he spent on his campaign.

Former GOP Gov. Larry Hogan’s entry into the race has made what was considered a safe bet in November for Democrats much more competitive. This raises the stakes for Tuesday’s primary.

Washington Post poll shows Hogan ahead of Trone and Alsobrooks. Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan publication, predicts that the seat will lean Democratic. An abortion question is also on the ballot in November.
