The Associated Press reported that an NYPD officer fired a gun inside Hamilton Hall, on the campus at Columbia University, while police were attempting to remove anti-Israel agitators.
The AP confirmed that a spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg confirmed this incident.
Doug Cohen, spokesperson for Bragg’s office, stated that no one was hurt and only officers were present when the gun was discharged. Cohen stated that no students were within the immediate area of the shooting.
Cohen said that Bragg’s Office is reviewing the incident. There were no further details available about the incident.
Gunfire was fired by NYPD officers who raided Hamilton Hall in the late hours of Tuesday night after hundreds of anti-Israel agitators barricaded themselves there for over 20 hours.
A recently released video from a police bodycam shows the moment that officers wore riot gear, opened a front door with a tool, and stacked multiple chairs against it.
Tarik Sheppard, NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner for Public Information, told “Your World Cavuto”, on Thursday, that many of the protesters weren’t students, but were outside agitators.
Sheppard added that the NYPD was only permitted to remove protesters after the university requested it. Several universities in the city asked for the NYPD’s presence to be on campus until at least the middle of May.
During the crackdown, more than 100 protesters have been arrested. According to an Associated Press tally, more than 2,000 individuals have been arrested in recent weeks during pro-Palestinian demonstrations on college campuses throughout the United States.
