Fico has been a mainstay in the Slovak political scene for many years. He was prime minister twice (2006-2010, and 2012-2018). Most recently, he was elected in 2023. Fico is the leader of the Smer left-populist party. The party won the 2023 elections based on a platform that included a cessation of aid to Ukraine, and closer ties with Russia.
