White House expected to announce new measures to reduce gun violence

According to a senior official in the administration, President Biden will sign an executive directive that will address priority issues for combating threats to firearms, such as eliminating gun conversion devices and creating a task force to deal with emerging threats to firearms.

The executive order will aim to improve active shooter drills in schools to better prepare children for emergencies.

The executive order was issued just a few days after a mass shooting that took place in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 21. Four people were killed and 17 injured. The executive order comes at a time when former President Trump has survived 2 attempted assassinations over the past few months.

Biden’s actions aim to reduce two emerging threats, machine gun conversion devices and 3-D printed firearms. The White House claims that firearm technology is evolving rapidly.

Senior administration officials said that conversion devices, which help convert semi-automatic guns into fully automatic weapons, are illegal under federal law, but they are still being used by criminals and seized by law enforcement agencies all over the country.

They are widely available because they are made from computer codes downloaded from the Internet. The 3D-printed firearms lack serial numbers that help investigators track down recovered firearms at crime scenes. The senior official stated that these 3D-printed firearms could also be made with non-metal material, which would make them invisible to magnetometers used in airports, courts, and event spaces.

Biden’s Executive Order will create a task force to address emerging threats involving firearms, consisting of leaders from federal departments and agencies.

The senior official in the administration said that the report will include an assessment of threats posed by 3D-printed firearms and machine gun conversion devices.

The assessment will include an evaluation of the operational and legal capabilities of federal agencies to detect, intercept, and seize firearms and firearm components.
