Wisconsin Just Told the Feds to Take Their Voter Verification and Shove It

Wisconsin’s Elections Commission just voted unanimously to block local clerks from verifying whether voters are actually citizens. Let that sink in for a moment. We’re talking about the most basic requirement for voting in American elections, and state officials are treating it like some kind of constitutional violation to simply check.

The tool in question is called SAVE, the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program. It’s a federal database that lets state and local officials verify citizenship status before handing out licenses or benefit programs like Medicaid. Pretty straightforward stuff. The Trump administration wanted election clerks to use it. Wisconsin said no thanks.

The commission’s reasoning? They claim checking citizenship status would violate state law restricting disclosure of voter registration information. But here’s where it gets interesting. There’s actually an exemption right there in the statute that allows voter information to be shared with law enforcement agencies or used for law enforcement purposes. Funny how that part didn’t seem to matter much in their decision.

You know what makes this particularly galling? Wisconsin could have as many as 70,000 illegal immigrants living within its borders right now. The state’s 2026 Democrat gubernatorial primary was decided by fewer than 3,500 votes. These margins aren’t theoretical exercises in civics class. They’re real numbers that determine who governs.

Elections Commission Chair Don Millis wrote a letter defending the decision, essentially arguing that Wisconsin law trumps a Supreme Court ruling from September that cleared the way for SAVE. He dressed it up in language about “independent citizenship verification” and “data sharing,” but the bottom line is clear. They don’t want federal agencies looking at Wisconsin voter data, period.

What’s truly remarkable is that even the Republican commissioner, Robert Spindell, voted for this. He said he disagreed with the rationale, argued in favor of working with the Trump administration, but then capitulated anyway. That’s the kind of spineless maneuvering that makes voters throw up their hands in frustration.

Meanwhile, the Democrat candidate running for Wisconsin Secretary of State, JoCasta Zamarripa, told an interviewer the day before this vote that her number one priority is passing legislation to give driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. In Wisconsin, a valid driver’s license lets eligible voters register online. Connect those dots.

Her opponent, Republican Jay Schroeder, has built his entire campaign around election integrity. Zamarripa’s response? She claims his efforts are trying to “undermine our elections.” The projection here is almost laughable if it weren’t so serious.

The Democrat gubernatorial nominee David Crowley has gone even further. At a candidate forum, he raised his hand when asked if he supports giving driver’s licenses to noncitizens. He also signaled agreement that law enforcement should be banned from asking about immigration status. When pressed on illegal immigration, Crowley said something truly revealing. “I’m not an ally. I’m an accomplice.” He’s stated he doesn’t see any scenario where he’d work with immigration enforcement.

This is the landscape we’re dealing with. On one side, you’ve got efforts to verify the most fundamental qualification for voting. On the other, you’ve got officials actively working to expand benefits to people who shouldn’t be here in the first place, creating pathways that blur the lines between legal residents and illegal aliens when it comes to official documentation.

Wisconsin State Senator André Jacque told The Daily Wire it’s “deeply frustrating” to see the Elections Commission repeatedly oppose common sense attempts to clean up voter rolls and fight fraud. That’s putting it mildly. This isn’t about making voting harder. It’s about ensuring that the people casting ballots are actually citizens with the right to do so.

The timing here matters too. We’re watching this unfold as states across the country grapple with election integrity questions. Some are tightening requirements. Others are loosening them. Wisconsin just chose its side, and it wasn’t the side of verification and accountability. When checking citizenship becomes controversial, when basic safeguards get labeled as voter suppression, something has gone terribly wrong with our priorities.
