Anti-Police Activist Allegedly Misused $75K in Donations and Neglected to Pay Employee

The attorney general in Washington, D.C., has accused a nonprofit organization and its founder of wasting tens and thousands of dollars on luxury trips and services while failing to pay the worker her dues.

The Office of the Attorney General of the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit on Monday against Raheem AI. This nonprofit is dedicated to so-called reforms and accountability in the police force, as well as its founder and executive director Brandon Anderson.

My office will not tolerate people who hide behind noble causes but violate the law or cheat taxpayers.

The AG press release stated that Anderson spent $75,000 of the Raheem AI donation “for his personal use” since 2021.

The Raheem AI Board of Directors did not do much to curb this alleged extravagant spending. The press release stated that the nonprofit had not appointed a separate treasurer since 2020 to oversee finances and manage spending, as required by law. The board allegedly also “failed” to implement measures to supervise the organization’s financials, including Anderson’s corruption.

The press release stated that Raheem AI had only one D.C. employee, a deputy director identified by the New York Post as Jasmine Banks. However, the company failed to pay “tens and thousands of dollars” in wages earned. Banks was also allegedly forced to sign a clause of non-competition by the organization, despite it being illegal in D.C.

The D.C. Attorney General hopes that by filing this lawsuit, it will dissolve Raheem AI and recover the misappropriated funds, as well as Banks’ alleged wages lost, and also prevent Anderson from ever leading another D.C. non-profit again.

In a statement, Attorney General Brian Schwalb stated, “Brandon Anderson misappropriated charitable donations in order to fund extravagant vacations and shopping sprees.”

Schwalb also said that Raheem AI’s police reform demands were a “noble” cause, but that they had used them to shield themselves from proper oversight.

He said, “My office won’t allow people to hide behind noble causes while breaking the law, cheating taxpayers, or stealing their employees.”

Anderson has not responded to The Post’s requests for comment on the lawsuit.

It is easy to mischaracterize individual expenditures without context.

Banks, who is no longer employed by Raheem AI told the New York Times in August she believes Anderson and his organization may have been a con all along.

Anderson, who is in favor of abolishing police, founded Raheem AI, an app that allows victims to report police misconduct, initially, in 2017. Later, the app was developed to offer an alternative to 911.

According to a press release, the organization is also obsessed with race. It promises to “equip black and brown community crisis responders with tools, training, and connections they need to provide healthcare.”

Anderson said he named his organization after an Oklahoma boyfriend who died during a routine traffic stop in 2007. Anderson claimed that the officer involved in the incident was violent. The Times, however, was unable to identify any Oklahoma homicide victims with the name Raheem. Nor could they find any cases of alleged police violence in Oklahoma that matched Anderson’s description.

Banks said that she began to suspect Anderson hadn’t experienced violence by police after he refused to join a survivor’s group. “He would not engage with other affected family members.” She said that she would invite him every time but he wouldn’t come.

Anderson told The Times that Banks’ and others’ accusations were “rife” with lies, but did not give any examples. He acknowledged that Raheem AI was a failure.

In a press release, he stated that it is easy to attribute failure to one or another cause in retrospect. Individual expenditures can be mischaracterized without context. “The bottom line, however, is that the effort didn’t succeed and I am largely responsible for that failure as it was my initiative.”

In a press release, it was claimed that the Raheem AI Board “ceased its operations” recently and Anderson has been placed on leave.

As of Tuesday morning, the organization’s website, Raheem.org, currently purports to be “under construction.” An archived version asserted that “getting killed by police is the sixth leading cause of death for young Black men in America.”
