It seems that the heartbreaking story of Laken Riley isn’t over. Laken Riley’s killer Jose Ibarra has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. You would think this would be the end. Colton Moore is a Republican state senator from Georgia who wants the Georgia Attorney General to intervene to demand the death penalty.
Jose Ibarra (26), an illegal immigrant from Mexico who was given taxpayer-funded flights to travel, was found guilty on Wednesday of stalking Riley, raping her and killing her in February. She fought for 18 minutes with her attacker, who was a University of Georgia student out running early in the morning. Riley died of blunt force trauma. Prosecutors said Ibarra hit her head with a stone after dragging the nursing student off a trail in the woods.
Colton Moore (a Republican state senator) wrote: “I’m officially calling for Attorney General Chris Carr, to file an urgent motion to intervene, and to demand the death sentence for the murderer Laken Riley.” District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez’ radical political agenda stood in the way of justice. She denied Laken’s friends, family, and community justice by refusing to pursue the death penalty.

The post that ends with x is:
Please join me in urging Attorney General Chris Carr to seek the death penalty for Jose Ibarra.
It would seem that there is enough evidence to eliminate any risk of execution of the wrong man. Ibarra was identified by his DNA under Laken Riley’s fingernails. Ibarra also had scratches on the neck of Ibarra that were made from Laken’s fingernails while she fought off her attacker. The state of Georgia will then decide whether to implement the death penalty.
Fox News Digital reported that the Attorney General’s Office is claiming they do not have the authority to intervene.
Moore disagreed with Carr’s spokesperson who claimed that the Attorney General of New York State does not have any jurisdiction.
I can send you the Constitution of Georgia section 3, paragraph 4.” Moore told Fox News Digital that it is clear that the Attorney General has jurisdiction over any felony cases. “And before, the state, i.e. the office of the attorney general, intervened.” He is our chief law enforcement officer. He should have realized that the district prosecutor is one of the most liberal in the nation and that she would not pursue the death sentence. Why do we have capital punishment at all in our state?”
A crime of this kind can evoke strong emotions. This case seems to warrant the death penalty in states that allow it. The evidence was convincing and the crime was a brutal and unprovoked assault on an innocent woman. This would seem to warrant the death penalty in a state that allows capital punishment.
Laken Riley’s parents are also a factor to consider. They finally have closure after the sentencing and can resume their lives. The death penalty and all the hearings and appellations it entails would only re-immerse the family in the memory of that terrible day. Is it crueler for Laken Riley’s parents to be reminded of their loss every day, or to let them move on knowing that Jose Ibarra will remain in prison for the rest of his life without parole?
Jose Ibarra never again will breathe in free air. The rest of his days will be spent looking at the prison bars on the other side. This is also a just punishment. It allows Laken Riley’s family and his friends to move forward without the case being rubbed into their faces repeatedly for months and even years.
