Parents Call for Accountability After Fight at Cesar Chavez High School Leaves Student with Concussion

Parents of a Cesar Chavez student at Houston Independent School District are demanding accountability after their son suffered from concussion, and cyberbullying resulting from a fight in the bathroom with three other students.

The incident happened in the first week at school and was reportedly a dispute over money. A recording of this violent incident has been widely distributed among students, which only adds to the trauma of the victim and family.

Janet Gallo shared her heartbreak: “Heartbroken. No parent would want to see their children treated in that manner, especially when they didn’t deserve it. Knowing the kind of child you have, it’s clear that he did not deserve it.”

The Parents said their son had been misled to enter the bathroom for a phony conversation, only to find himself ambushed.

“They lured them to the bathroom by telling him that they only wanted to talk to him. It was a period of school. He thought they would just talk to him. He couldn’t leave because they blocked the door. Gallo stated that he had no choice but to defend himself.

Carlos Aguirre expressed frustration at the lack of response from the school administration: “They were not much help.” We were not interested in talking to the principal when we went there. It was almost as if the principal didn’t care what happened.

The parents filed a police complaint with the HISD Police Department and the Houston Police Department in light of this incident.

FOX contacted HISD for their response to the online video and to find out if they were conducting an investigation. The district issued the following statement:

“Administrators are aware of an altercation that occurred at Cesar Chavez High School involving several students. We do not condone this behavior and the incident is being handled following the District’s Code of Conduct. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of all our students and staff.”

According to medical advice, the family’s son is only allowed to attend half-days at another school while he recovers from his concussion.

Gallo expressed concern about the safety of schools: “I don’t feel that there is enough security. The main concern is that I do not want any child to be killed at school. My son almost died. What would have happened if he hadn’t gotten up by himself from the bathroom?”
