Health Concern: Mitch McConnell Collapses in the Senate

Mitch McConnell, the retiring Senate Majority leader (R-KY), fell during a Senate Lunch on Tuesday. The medical staff was quickly called. McConnell, despite being pronounced “fine” by Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, was reported to have a cut on his face and required a wheelchair.

The 82-year-old has had several health problems. In August 2023, he experienced a bizarre “freezing” event after he appeared to have no idea where he was when observing him in July that year.

The Kentucky Republican announced his resignation from the leadership position:

McConnell held the record for being the longest-serving Republican leader in Senate History, with an 18-year-long tenure.

His years-long feud against Trump has put him at odds with many Republicans who want a MAGA to lead the new president’s second term.

He shocked his colleagues earlier this year when he announced he was stepping down as the leader.

This wasn’t the first time he had fallen:

McConnell was unable to move for 20 seconds in July 2023 when he fell several times and needed help from his colleagues.

He ‘faceplanted” when getting off the plane at Washington Reagan Airport. This sparked several incidents that raised concerns about his health.

McConnell made a joke about the pause and said he was fine. However, his office has not yet confirmed what caused it.

McConnell also fell twice in 2023. One of those falls resulted in a concussion.

It was also widely speculated that he had been affected neurologically by the spills.

John Thune, a South Dakota senator, has been selected to assume McConell’s leadership position:

John Thune (63), a Republican senator, was elected last month to replace McConnell. He will now usher Donald Trump’s ambitious agenda into effect with a new GOP majority.

Joining Thune, South Dakota, in leadership are Assistant Majority Leader: John Barrasso, Wyoming, Conference Chair Tom Cotton, Arkansas, Policy Committee Chair Shelly Moore Capito, West Virginia, and Conference Vice Chair: James Lankford, Oklahoma.

McConnell also suffered a sprained hand from the accident.
