Jon Stewart defends former first lady Michelle Obama, who exhibited a “consistent moral stance” when she skipped President Trump’s inaugural.
Stewart, on Monday’s episode of “The Daily Show,” referred to former commanders-in-chief and Trump critics who attended the 47th President’s inauguration in the Capitol.
“Even Mike Pence showed up — I guess to let the crowd finish the job,” the Comedy Central host joked of Trump’s former vice president. During the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, some rioters were heard chanting, “Hang Mike Pence,” for his role in certifying former President Biden’s 2020 election win.
Stewart said that those attending the inauguration on Monday were “all of those people who warned Americans not to support this fascist wannabe dictator named Trump.”
Stewart snorted, “Only Michelle Obama appeared to have the consistently ethical stance that said, ‘When they go low, I remain the f— at home’.” The audience laughed.
Stewart mimicked the former First Lady, saying “I’m not going anywhere, I’m staying at home.”
Michelle Obama didn’t join her husband for the inaugural ceremony, a decision that her representatives had announced a week before.
She is a vocal opponent of Trump. According to her, the 47th President “did everything he could to make people afraid” of her and her spouse.
Obama stated that Trump’s “limited and narrow view of the universe made him feel threatened” by two successful, hardworking Black people.
In 2016, Obama’s now famous motto “When they go lower, we go higher” made headlines when she encouraged attendees to take the high road and follow her husband’s example.
In 2018, she acknowledged that it was not always easy to adhere to the mantra. She admitted there were times when she wished President Obama would “just curse out” political opponents.
