We now have a new secretary of state, Marco Rubio. He was confirmed on Monday by the Senate with a 99-0 vote.

The Senate confirmed Marco Rubio on Monday as Donald Trump’s Secretary of State, making him the first cabinet official to be approved by that chamber.
The confirmation vote was held just hours after Trump’s inauguration as president. The 99-0 vote was overwhelmingly bipartisan, with no senator voting against the nomination.
Rubio, a Republican Senator from Florida, has been in office since 2011. His nomination was backed by several Senate Democrats who praised their colleague for his qualifications.
Rubio has made a remarkable political turn in the last few years, going from Trump’s enemy to his ally. He will now play a major role in Trump’s administration as a senior official.
Rick Scott, the other Florida Senator, said that he was going to miss his fellow citizens but knew that he’d do a great job.
Rubio and Trump have reconciled their differences since they ran for the presidency in 2016, with Trump taking home the entire prize.
Both Republicans and Democrats were impressed by what he said at his confirmation hearings:
Rubio responded to questions from senators by expressing his support for NATO, as well as the bipartisan law that he cosponsored which states that the US can’t withdraw from the NATO alliance without the approval of the Senate or an act from Congress.
Rubio spoke about the importance of the US taking a strong position concerning China at his confirmation hearing. He called the Chinese Communist Party “potent” as well as “dangerous”.
“They’re a technological adversary and competitor, an industrial competitor, an economic competitor, geopolitical competitor, a scientific competitor now, in every realm, it’s an extraordinary challenge and one that I believe will define the 21st century,” Rubio said.
He said, “We allowed them to get by with it. And frankly, the Chinese did what every country would do given the opportunity, they took it. Now we have to deal with the ramifications.”
