Why Is Donald Trump Jr. Visiting Greenland?

Published on

Donald Trump Jr., the son of the President-elect, if anyone didn’t know, was headed to Greenland on Monday. A photo and Truth Social post by the President-elect on Tuesday revealed that his son was in Greenland, but didn’t say why.

Donald Trump Jr. has traveled to Greenland in response to his father’s renewed desire for the U.S. government to gain control of the Danish territory.

The younger Trump has no plans, according to reports, to meet with officials in Greenland on his visit to the country on Tuesday. However, the president-elect linked his trip to his bigger ambitions via a post on social media.

Trump stated on Truth Social that Greenland was an amazing place and its people would benefit greatly if and when it became part of the United States. “We will cherish and protect it from an outside world that is very violent. Make Greenland Great Again!”

The President-elect is not the first to talk about Greenland. He has floated the idea many times, even during his first term.

Why send his son then? Donald Trump Jr. spoke only about his arrival, where he stayed, the scenery, and the history of Greenland in a video filmed from Greenland.

The President-elect made a general statement on Truth Social.

Donald Trump Junior’s presence in Greenland brings up some interesting questions. The words “…and My Reps” are not clear. Donald Trump Jr. does not have the authority to negotiate on behalf of America. He is not an official. This type of backdoor diplomacy, or making international deals, isn’t a brand new thing. The Younger Trump could be testing the waters. He has access to local leaders, which is not available to the average tourist. It’s possible that he could be setting the stage for a discussion.

This is a nonsense, of course. Greenland’s leaders aren’t enthusiastic about the idea.

Mute Egede has publicly stated that he would like to see Greenland become independent from Denmark. He has also stated that the territory was not for sale, despite Trump’s proposal. A 2009 agreement allows Greenland to declare its independence from Denmark following a referendum on the entire territory.

Greenland has also been repeatedly denied by the Kingdom of Denmark. Why then does the new Trump administration appear so eager to explore this concept? Denmark is a NATO member and, as such, we are bound by treaty to protect Greenland if this becomes necessary. We have already established a base in Greenland. One would assume that the rare-earth minerals and oil/gas reserves on Greenland would be subject to trade negotiations.

As this story unfolds, it becomes more and more difficult to answer the question: What is Donald Trump doing?
