Canada Concedes to Trump’s Tariff Demands

Mexico, as we reported previously, has bowed to the tariff threats of President Donald Trump. The Mexican government agreed to send 10,000 National Guard troops to the border to stop illegal aliens from entering our country and to prevent drugs. The U.S. agreed in return to delay tariffs by a month while they worked out the deal.

It was a sign of success that Trump’s tactic had worked. The question was, what would happen if a similar situation arose with Canada? Justin Trudeau tried to be tough on Sunday with retaliatory duties but was slapped down by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

It looks like Trump has won yet another victory.

Justin Trudeau now reports that same “good decision” that the Mexican President made with Trump. Canada will send 10,000 personnel to the border to combat illegal immigrants and drugs.

I had a great call with President Trump. Canada is implementing its $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing border security with new choppers and technology, increased coordination with American partners, and more resources to stop fentanyl flow. Nearly 10,000 personnel will protect the border. Canada has also made new commitments. We will appoint a Fentanyl Czar and list cartels on our terrorist watchlist. We will ensure that 24/7 eyes are on the border. And we’ll launch a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime. I’ve also signed a new Intelligence Directive on organized crime and fentanyl, and we will back it up with $200 million. The proposed tariffs will be suspended for at least 30 working days as we work together.

It looks like there are a lot of eyes at the border, plus a Joint Strike Force that is still in place to address the problems. This sounds better than the Mexican agreement.

Trump was looking for action to address the issues, and now it appears he’s made some commitments. He is demonstrating the power of strength and the art of the bargain. In some cases, tariffs can be a powerful tool. We’ve been so used to Joe Biden’s ineffective leadership that we forgot that you don’t have to get rolled. This is an amazing victory, and it’s a blow to the Democrats who tried to incite fear with the tariff approach. It’s hard to argue against success.

Even the most cautious of people saw it.
