Donald Trump teased again on Thursday about the possibility of a third White House term in 2028.
During a National Prayer Breakfast event on Thursday, Trump made passing remarks hinting at a third term. According to a clip posted on Mediaite, he began by emphasizing his decision to attend in person rather than via Skype.
“But no, I want to be here with you. And I have been here with you,” Trump said. “And I do that even though they say I can’t run again. That’s the expression: ‘Sir?'” He then added, “Then somebody said, ‘I don’t think you can.’ Oooh! No, I want to be with you regardless. And it’s an honor.”
Trump stated last month that “he is not 100% certain” that the Constitution prohibits him from running for office again.
“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100% sure, because I don’t know … I think I’m not allowed to run again,” Trump told an audience of Congressional Republicans in Miami.
Trump joked also about a possible third term a week after winning the election on Nov. 5.
Trump told House Republicans at a hotel in Washington, D.C., “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we’ve got to figure something else,”
The 22nd Amendment of 1951 prohibits someone from serving as president for more than two consecutive terms.
The amendment states, “No person shall be able to be elected as president more than twice.” It also states that no one who has served in the position of President or acted in the role of President for more than 2 years during a time when another person was elected.
