Republicans have increased pressure on Justice Department officials to release classified records and documents related to President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and other federal secrets.
In January, President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing agencies to develop plans for the distribution of files and documents related to the assassinations of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy Jr and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), who leads the House Oversight Committee Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets is pressing the Department of Justice to answer when this will occur — but so far she says that the Department of Justice has been silent.
Luna wrote in a Monday post on X, “On February 11 & 19, House oversight sent a request to the DOJ for the status of the Epstein file release as well as JFK, etc.” The DOJ did not respond. We’re reaching out on X, because the AG hasn’t responded. What is the current status of these documents @AGPamBondi? The documents have been ordered to be declassified.”
Luna wrote to the Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabrield, Attorney General Pam Bondi, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and White House Counsel David Warrington, requesting an update by Thursday about the plans for the public release of these documents.
In the letter, the Task Force and the public are also asked to provide details about when declassified documents can be made available.
Trump’s Executive Order instructed the Department of Justice, in coordination with Gabbard Waltz, Warrington, to develop a plan to release the JFK documents by February 7 and to prepare a similar plan to release the MLK, Robert F. Kennedy, and other files on March 9th.
Luna also wants the Justice Department’s list of clients for Jeffrey Epstein to be made public. In 2019, the American financier passed away while waiting for a trial over sex trafficking charges.
Bondi also said that Epstein’s client list would be reviewed soon, while she had been looking at the Kennedy and King documents.
Bondi said to “America Reports'” John Roberts on Friday that the Epstein documents were “sitting right now in front of me for review.” Bondi said, “That was a presidential directive.”.
Luna isn’t the only Republican legislator who wants these documents released. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) also claimed Monday that Democrats had undermined her efforts to crack the Epstein Trafficking Ring wide open. She vowed she would get answers from newly confirmed FBI director Kash Patel.
Blackburn stated on X Monday that “the time for transparency has come.”
Mike Lee (R-Utah) said, in a post on Monday X, that these documents belonged to the American public and it was “about damn time” they were given access.
The Office for the Director of National Intelligence did not respond immediately to our request for comment but informed the Associated Press of a submitted plan regarding the Kennedy Files.
The White House also did not respond immediately to our request for comment. Trump promised on the campaign trail to declassify JFK documents if he won the election of 2024.
On March 26, the Task Force on Declassification of Federal Secrets of the House of Representatives will hold its initial public hearing.
