New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says that she is “leading resistance” to President Donald Trump just weeks after saying the opposite.
Hochul told NPR’s “Morning Edition” that she will “fight hard” when questioned about the congestion toll in New York City, which was blocked by Trump’s administration last month.
“We offered up an olive branch, [we said] ‘We’ll work with you on infrastructure. Let’s redo Penn Station,'” Hochul said. “Those areas were common ground. But once you draw first blood on us, we’re coming back hard. And I will be leading the resistance on policies like these where you’re hurting New Yorkers directly. This is our decision, not yours.”
But less than two weeks earlier, she told the reporters the exact opposite.
Hochul told the New York Post that she was asked “numerous times” if she led the resistance against the Trump Administration.
Last month, the Trump administration ordered an end to the controversial traffic toll program. The program was launched on Jan. 5, with the goal of funding mass transit and reducing congestion by charging a $9 fee to most vehicles that enter Manhattan south of Central Park.
Hochul and Trump met at the White House later that month for a private meeting in which Hochul argued for the program. Hochul said that the meeting did not change Trump’s mind.
Hochul said on Monday that Democratic Governors should be the “firewalls” to protect federally funded programs from the Trump Administration and Republicans.
Hochul stated that Democratic Governors should heed his call to “stand up against the destruction of policies which have helped people for decades and are still in place today.”
