President Trump Sets 60-Day Deadline for Iran to Finalize New Nuclear Agreement

It was reported that President Donald Trump included in his recent letter to Iran’s supreme ruler a deadline of two months for a new nuclear agreement.

Trump wrote to Ali Khamenei to ask for a new nuclear agreement to replace the one he renounced during his first term.

Axios reported a two-month time limit was included in President Obama’s letter. However, it wasn’t specified if the clock started at the moment the letter was sent or when the negotiations began.

Sources have told the outlet Trump has written that he does not want negotiations to continue indefinitely and that a deal can be reached within two months.

The report also stated that U.S. and Israeli military action would increase dramatically if Iran rejected Trump’s outreach efforts and refused to negotiate.

Khamenei and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have rejected Trump’s letter and public exhortations for nuclear talks as deceptive and bullying.

Khamenei said to a large crowd on March 12 that a letter sent by Trump regarding potential nuclear talks is “deceptive”, and was intended to give the impression that Iran doesn’t want to negotiate.

Khamenei had said that Tehran would not be pushed into negotiations.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the country would respond to Trump’s invitation for talks only after a thorough review. It accused Washington of failing to match words with actions.

Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the foreign ministry, said: “We have no reason at this time to make public [Trump’s] Letter… We will respond to it through the appropriate channels following a thorough review.”

Western powers accuse Iran that it is seeking nuclear weapons, by enriching its uranium to 60% purity. This is above the level they consider acceptable for a civil program.

Trump warned Iran that it would suffer the consequences of any further attacks from the Houthi group.

In a Sunday televised address, the commander for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared that his country would take “a crushing, decisive, and destructive response” against any nation that targets it, as the U.S. intensifies airstrikes in Yemen on terrorists who are backed by Iran.
