6 Million at Risk as Extreme Fire Danger Escalates Across Southwest

Hot temperatures and strong winds are expected to increase the wildfire risk in multiple states of the Southwest and South Plains.

Wildfires pose a serious risk to firefighters throughout New Mexico, as well as in other states such as West Texas, Colorado, and eastern Arizona. Central Kansas and parts of Oklahoma are at risk, as is New Mexico.

Red flag warnings are in effect for Albuquerque and Santa Fe, as well as other New Mexico cities. Silver City, Deming, Los Lunas, and Socorro were also under critical fire threats. on Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service of Albuquerque posted on social media that today, “extremely dry air masses and extremely strong winds will create a fire weather situation across the majority of New Mexico.”

According to the NWS, critical fire weather conditions are expected to continue through Friday in eastern and central New Mexico.

According to officials, a combination of extremely low relative humidities (ranging from 5 to 15%) and wind gusts predicted to reach 65 mph can lead to fires spreading quickly.

New Mexico continues to suffer from extreme and severe drought conditions, which will increase the risk of fires.

The NWS issues an extreme warning when wildfires are burning or may start because of weather conditions and fuel conditions.
