Where exactly is Ilhan Omar when her own district is under siege?
That’s the question John Nagel keeps asking, and honestly, it’s the question every resident in the Twin Cities suburbs should be asking too. Nagel spent three decades as a Minnesota state trooper. He knows what real violence looks like, and he’s watching it unfold across Eden Prairie, Bloomington, and surrounding communities while the congresswoman who’s supposed to represent these people remains conspicuously absent.
Two teens got shot outside a high school football game. Think about that for a second. A football game, the kind of Friday night event that’s supposed to be about community and tradition and kids just being kids. Instead, parents are wondering if their children will make it home alive. Over in Bloomington, investigators recovered more than 100 shell casings in a single neighborhood. That’s not a shooting. That’s a war zone.
Nagel is running against Omar in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, and he’s not pulling punches about what he sees as complete Democratic failure on public safety. The gangs involved are predominantly Somali American, a fact that makes some politicians squeamish but doesn’t make it any less true. You can’t fix a problem you refuse to name.
“They’re being restrained by politicians, people that are trying soft on crime, people that are trying to send somebody other than a police officer to take care of issues, and it’s not working,” Nagel said. He’s right. The experiment with alternative responses and restorative justice sounds wonderful in faculty lounges and policy papers. But when gang members are emptying magazines into residential streets, residents don’t need a social worker. They need law enforcement with the backing to actually enforce the law.
The soft-on-crime approach has consequences, and those consequences are now playing out in real time. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty gets specific criticism from Nagel for having her head in the sand. Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher said the same thing in more diplomatic language this week, noting that a big chunk of the problem is the failure to hold gang members accountable. He called for more aggressive prosecution of juveniles. That shouldn’t be controversial, but in Minnesota’s current political climate, it apparently is.
Democrats have spent years building a system where criminals feel emboldened because they know the consequences are minimal. Catch and release isn’t just for fishing anymore. It’s become criminal justice policy in blue America, and the results are exactly what common sense would predict. When you signal that crime carries no real penalty, you get more crime. Shocking, I know.
Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison have been largely silent on the escalating gang violence. Nagel says most Democrats simply don’t want enforcement, even though the people they represent desperately do. That disconnect between what voters need and what their leaders will provide is the kind of thing that can flip districts, even deep blue ones.
An 18-year-old named Adam Abdihakeem Adam got charged Friday with two counts of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon related to the Eden Prairie high school shooting. Moriarty’s office issued a statement saying he’ll be held accountable and that violence requires a professional, coordinated response. That’s great. Now do it for the next hundred cases, because they’re coming.
The question remains unanswered. Where is Ilhan Omar? Why isn’t she at community meetings? Why hasn’t she issued substantive statements about how to stop this violence? The people in her district are terrified, and their congresswoman is nowhere to be found. That’s not representation. That’s abandonment.
