Elon Musk will reportedly be rotating into a supporting role at DOGE in order to focus his attention on his private business.
Politico sources claim that President Donald Trump sent a message to his senior cabinet members.
The report did not mention any future leaders for DOGE.
Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary, responded on X that “this ‘ scoop’ is garbage.” She confirmed his eventual departure, without providing a timeline, and rejected suggestions that there was news in this.
Elon Musk and Donald Trump both publicly stated that Elon would leave public service after his incredible work with DOGE was completed.
Musk’s 130-day clock for “special government employees” would expire in early June. So, this news that he is stepping down from his position as DOGE leader may not be based on the most recent events, such as the Wisconsin State Supreme Court losing its election to Democrats on Tuesday night or domestic terror attacks against Tesla.
Politico sources state that Trump is still pleased with Musk and DOGE despite speculations outside of the company that a rift could form between these two leaders.
While White House sources told Politico Musk would “stay” longer than the temporary 130-day status, it appears now that Musk will move from a mainstay at the White House to an informal adviser from the outside.
Another source told Politico that critics were “fooling” themselves if they believed Musk’s informal advice would not influence the Trump Administration.
Musk said on Sunday that his close involvement in the administration had cost him a great deal of money. This included the nearly $20 million he spent to win the Wisconsin Supreme Court special election, which was won by the Democrats Tuesday night by ten points.
Sources told Politico that Trump made his comments about Musk resigning from the DOGE leadership at an impromptu Cabinet meeting on March 24, two days after massive airstrikes against Houthi rebels and the controversy that followed over the liberal media editor who was mistakenly added to a Signal conversation.
Trump invited reporters to the Cabinet after telling the Cabinet behind closed doors that Musk was stepping down, according to the report.
According to Politico, Trump called Elon “a patriot” as well as “a friend.”
Trump said publicly on Monday that he would “keep him for as long as I can keep him,” however, “at some point Elon is going to want to return to his company.”
