Authorities said that power was restored early Friday to 98.8% of customers after an island-wide Blackout struck Puerto Rico earlier in the week.
Luma Energy, the company that oversees the transmission of electricity on the island, reported that more than 1,45 million customers were back to normal in less than 48 hours after the power outage.
Luma stated that despite the restoration being nearing completion, some customers could continue to experience temporary power outages because of limited generation.
Officials have confirmed that the blackout on Wednesday afternoon was caused by a transmission failure, which then led to generators being shut down across the island. More than 400,000 customers were also without water.
The cause of the failure was not immediately known, but authorities are investigating to determine if a series of breakers failed or overgrown vegetation caused it.
Gov. Jenniffer González said that she expects to receive a preliminary assessment in the coming days.
The second blackout in Puerto Rico occurred on Wednesday, less than four months ago. The previous blackout occurred on New Year’s Eve.
