Elise Stefanik, a New York State Representative, is considering running for governor. Politico reported on the possibility based on information provided by anonymous sources.
Mike Johnson, the House Speaker, announced the New York Republican as chairwoman of the House Republican Leadership for the 119th Congress last week. This was in response to President Donald Trump withdrawing Stefanik’s nomination as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. This announcement was made just before her confirmation hearing. Trump stated that it was important for her not to leave Congress due to the small Republican majority.
According to the Politico article about Stefanik’s potential run for Governor, she has received support from several New York Republicans as well as some Trump supporters.
If President Trump was aware of the potential new direction for Stefanik as reported, he made no reference earlier Wednesday when he posted to Truth Social, “Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is GREAT!!!”
