Donald Trump, President of the United States, threatened China with an additional 50% tariff on Monday after the Asian nation imposed 34% tariffs on U.S. imported goods.
He made the threat in a Truth Social posting:
China retaliated yesterday with a 34% increase in Tariffs. This is on top of the already high Tariffs they have, as well as their illegal Subsidization, non-monetary Tariffs, and long-term currency manipulation. I warned that any country who retaliates against us by imposing additional Tariffs will immediately be met with substantially higher Tariffs. If China doesn’t withdraw its 34% increase over their long-term trading abuses before tomorrow, April 8, 2025, then the United States will impose ADDITIONAL tariffs of 50% on China, effective April 9. All talks with China regarding their requests to meet with us will also be stopped! The negotiations with other countries who have requested to meet will start immediately. We appreciate your attention on this issue!
