AOC Warns DHS: ‘There Will Be a Problem’ If House Democrats Are Arrested

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat hailing from New York, has fired a warning shot across the bow of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Her message? If DHS officials arrest House Democrats protesting the Trump administration’s immigration policies, they will have “a problem”.

Ocasio-Cortez, in a video shared on Instagram, accused DHS of “public intimidation”. She called out Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan, contending that the lawbreakers were not the members of Congress but rather the very individuals tasked with maintaining homeland security.

This stern warning comes on the heels of a statement from Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary for public affairs. McLaughlin suggested that three New Jersey Democrats in Congress, including Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who was cited by Ocasio-Cortez, could face charges over an alleged altercation during a visit to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Newark, New Jersey.

ICE officials contend that the congressmen were behaving in a physically disruptive manner among a crowd of protesters outside the detention center. Watson Coleman, however, vehemently denies the claim. “Members of Congress and any public official are not above the law,” McLaughlin said, reinforcing her stance on the issue.

The detention center in question, known as Delaney Hall, is a bone of contention in New Jersey. On one hand, Trump administration officials argue its necessity of detaining criminals who are in the U.S. illegally. On the other hand, local Democrats like Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who was himself arrested and later released during the same visit, contend that the center is operating without the necessary permits.

It’s the age-old push and pull between law enforcement and civil rights, between maintaining order and ensuring freedom. The question that keeps bouncing around my mind is this… Who gets to determine the balance between these competing values? And when the scales tip too far in one direction, who will dare to tip them back?
