Democrats Zero In on Abrego Garcia Case During Heated Noem Hearing

During Wednesday’s hearing before the House Homeland Security Committee, the Democrats, with their usual tunnel vision, chose to focus almost exclusively on the case of one individual, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, during Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s testimony. A classic strategy from the left’s playbook, it seems: distract from the larger issue at hand by zeroing in on a single controversial case.

Now, let’s say that, for the sake of argument, the Democrats’ hour-and-a-half dissection of Abrego Garcia’s case during the three-hour hearing was pertinent. The Supreme Court’s decision on April 10 to remove this alleged MS-13 member from an El Salvador prison and return him to U.S. soil, with the demand for “due process,” was indeed significant. But let’s not lose sight of the forest for the trees.

The left will tell you that “due process,” as it’s written in “Section 5 under the Constitution,” applies to everyone that ICE has apprehended in the United States. When Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi threw this loaded question at Secretary Noem, she confidently replied, “Correct.” She affirmed that all individuals, regardless of their actions, were given due process. But Thompson seemed more interested in semantic wordplay than actual constitutional principles.

Noem correctly pointed out that one of the “tools” granted to the Department of Homeland Security by Congress is the expedited removal of illegal aliens. Thompson’s interjection that he was “talking about the Constitution of the United States,” not “tools,” is a non-argument. It’s merely an attempt to downplay the legal and constitutionally aligned tools available to DHS to enforce immigration laws.

The Democrats’ focus on Abrego Garcia distracts from the broader issue of immigration enforcement. Their obsession with due process for illegal aliens obscures the fundamental truth: the Constitution provides Congress with the authority to enforce our immigration laws. And, as Noem correctly pointed out, the ability to expedite the removal of illegal aliens is a critical component of this enforcement.
