Iranian Cleric Fires Back: ‘We Don’t Take Orders From Madman Trump’

Ahmad Khatami, a senior cleric from Iran, has reportedly taken umbrage with President Donald Trump, accusing him of displaying the demeanor of “a madman” as a fear-evoking tactic against other nations.

According to Newsweek, Khatami, known for his hardline stance, has dismissed the possibility of direct discussions with the U.S. about Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Yet, he did acknowledge that indirect dialogues are underway, supervised by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Reports indicate that Khatami views Trump’s behavior as psychological warfare, with the President allegedly presenting himself as a madman to instill fear in nations. “The Iranian people will drive him madder, because fear of the enemy has no place in our nation’s code,” Khatami was quoted by IranWire.

Despite acknowledging the connection between uranium enrichment and nuclear weapons capability, Khatami reaffirmed Tehran’s official stance of not developing atomic bombs. “We take our orders from Islam, not America,” the cleric, who leads Friday prayers in Tehran, reportedly said.

These remarks come as Iran and the U.S. gear up for a fifth round of negotiations in Rome over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program. Oman is reported to be acting as a mediator for these discussions.

U.S. officials, including Trump, insist that any agreement that could result in lifting sanctions on Iran’s economy must ensure that Iran discontinues uranium enrichment, a demand that Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, rebuffed online, stating that no enrichment would mean “we do NOT have a deal.”

The discussions aim to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the U.S. easing some of the crippling economic sanctions it has imposed on the Islamic Republic. “We have one very, very clear red line, and that is enrichment. We cannot allow even 1% of an enrichment capability,” said Trump’s Mideast envoy, Steve Witkoff, as reported by Newsweek.
