MIT Dismantles DEI Office Amid National Crackdown on Diversity Programs

We have reports indicating that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has ceased operations of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) office. The news arrives in the wake of the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw grants from universities that implement DEI programs and have been deemed insufficient in managing on-campus demonstrations against Israel.

MIT President Sally Kornbluth, according to the New York Post, officially shuttered the Community and Equity Office last week. Before this, Kornbluth had banned the use of diversity statements in faculty recruitment or student admissions. Now, a high-ranking administrative role will be removed in a move towards a merit-based focus.

This development follows earlier reports that MIT, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was one of over 50 universities under investigation for alleged racial discrimination as part of Trump’s campaign to discontinue DEI programs. MIT has also joined legal challenges against the administration’s cutbacks to National Institute of Health (NIH) and Department of Energy grants for medical and scientific research.

The institution has recently disclosed that these grant cuts have cost MIT up to $35 million and compelled it to decrease the number of available positions for graduate students in its 2025-26 budget by 8%. Kornbluth was one of three university presidents who testified before the House in December 2023 about antisemitic on-campus protests and actions against Jewish individuals.

In response, the House passed a resolution rebuking testimony from Kornbluth, then-Harvard University President Claudine Gay, and then-University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill. Meanwhile, Harvard is challenging in court a slew of measures imposed by Trump, including an attempt to ban the university from enrolling foreign students, termination of its contracts with the federal government, severe cuts to its multibillion-dollar grants, and a challenge to its tax-free status.

As we continue to monitor these developments, we are reminded of the importance of accuracy and truth, the public’s right to information, and the essential role democratic institutions play in our society.
