North Korea Blasts Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ Defense Plan

Reports from Pyongyang indicate that North Korea vociferously criticized President Donald Trump’s recent announcement to construct the Golden Dome missile defense system. The nation, in turn, pledged to enhance its defense measures.

North Korean officials labeled the U.S. initiative as “the height of self-righteousness, arrogance, high-handed and arbitrary practice”. This judgment was broadcast by state media, quoting a memorandum from the Institute for American Studies of the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) Foreign Ministry.

The memo pointed out that throughout history, the U.S. has defended its space militarization strategies, asserting that the only way to intercept nuclear missiles headed for its mainland is through a space-based interception system. Under this justification, North Korea argues, the U.S. has been dedicated to erecting a missile defense system targeting independent sovereign states, including the DPRK itself.

The Golden Dome, estimated to cost $175 billion by President Trump, is projected to operate similarly to Israel’s Iron Dome, providing defense against strikes from space. However, North Korea, in the memo, appears to refute the defensive stance of the project, accusing the U.S. of trying to provoke a nuclear conflict.

This development follows earlier reports that both Russia and China have also expressed criticism of the space defense system. China, in particular, has claimed that the initiative has “strong offensive implications” and accuses the U.S. of compromising the security of all countries, thereby destabilizing global strategic balance and stability.

President Trump has predicted that the system would be fully operational by the end of his potential second term. However, experts have raised doubts about this timeline, suggesting that the project would require bipartisan support from Congress and additional time for completion.

According to Melanie Marlowe, senior associate with the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Missile Defense Project, “We will not have space-based interceptors in three years”. She emphasized the difficulties and high costs associated with this project, but expressed optimism for progress if swift action is taken.

In response to what it termed the “largest arms buildup plan in history,” North Korea has committed to escalating its defense measures. “The global security environment, which is becoming uncertain due to the U.S. undisguised moves for space militarization, proves that the security of the state and the region can be reliably guaranteed only by the symmetry of the matchless power capable of firmly bringing not only the current challenges but also the coming challenges under its control,” the memo reportedly said.

These developments underline the escalating tensions surrounding global security and the ongoing debate over the militarization of space.
