Trump Names Fox’s Jeanine Pirro as Interim U.S. Attorney in Surprise Move

President Donald Trump, in a move that caused eyebrows to lift and heads to shake, announced that he was appointing Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as the top federal prosecutor for the nation’s capital. Pirro, a former county prosecutor and elected judge, steps into this position after Trump rescinded the nomination of his first choice.

Pirro, who has been a part of Fox News since 2006 and co-hosts the weekday evening show “The Five,” made a name for herself in New York’s Westchester County Court back in 1990. She served three terms there as the elected district attorney. Now, she’s been tapped to lead the nation’s largest U.S. Attorney’s office, at least temporarily, after Trump retracted his nomination of conservative activist Ed Martin Jr. for the role. This retraction came following criticism from a key Republican senator, who expressed concerns about Martin’s defense of those who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

“He’s a terrific person, and he wasn’t getting the support from people that I thought,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “But we have somebody else who will be great.”

Pirro is just the latest appointment from Fox News by Trump. The list also includes Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who was a co-host on “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

Martin, on the other hand, had been serving as the acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia since Trump’s first week in office. His hopes of securing the job permanently, however, were dashed amidst questions about his qualifications and background. It’s worth noting that Martin had never served as a prosecutor or tried a case before taking office in January.

As we navigate these uncharted waters, we must remember that at the end of the day, the heart of this matter beats with a simple truth: Our justice system is only as good as those who serve within it.
