Trump Signals Support for Medicaid Work Requirements

Jason Smith, the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee of Representatives, stated on Fox News Sunday that President Donald Trump has “shown an openness” towards work requirements for Medicaid.

The Republican-controlled Congress is considering drastic cuts to Medicaid. Medicaid provides health coverage for 83 million people with low incomes. The federal government and the states jointly fund this program.

Republicans support a requirement that adult recipients must work a certain number of hours a week to keep or get Medicaid benefits.

“The President has made it very clear that he doesn’t want to reduce benefits for people on Medicaid or Medicare. He wants to reform and create efficiency.” Smith said, Trump has shown an openness towards the work requirements.”
