Trump Marks Juneteenth With Controversial Take on U.S. Holidays

Former President Donald Trump has made a statement on his social media platform criticizing the number of federal holidays in the United States. This comes on Juneteenth, a relatively new federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in America.

Donald Trump posted a message on his Truth Social account expressing concern over the economic impact of what he termed “non-working holidays.” The former president stated, “Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed.”

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 under the administration of President Joe Biden. It marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers brought news of emancipation to enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

The significance becomes clear when we consider that Mr. Trump, during his presidency, issued statements recognizing Juneteenth. In 2018, he and the First Lady sent “best wishes to those celebrating Juneteenth” and acknowledged the contributions of African Americans to American greatness. Similar messages were issued in 2019 and 2020.

This development follows earlier reports that Mr. Trump’s administration engaged with Black community leaders on issues of coordination between federal, state, and local partners. The White House press secretary, when asked about any planned commemoration of Juneteenth by the former president, stated she was not aware of any proclamations to be signed.

Supporters of federal holidays argue for their cultural and historical significance, while critics, including Mr. Trump, express concerns about economic impacts. The evidence suggests that the debate over federal holidays and their place in American society is likely to continue.
