Colorado Capitol to Unveil New Portrait of Donald Trump

The White House, in a move as swift as a tumbleweed in a West Texas wind, has donated a new portrait to hang temporarily while another is commissioned. Well, it seems the current likeness didn’t sit well with the former president. He took to Truth Social, stating, “He’d prefer not having a picture than having this one.”

The artist, Sarah Boardman, finds herself in a pickle as tangy as Austin’s best barbecue sauce. Trump’s words have hit her career harder than a norther blowing through the panhandle. She’s crying foul, saying the allegations of purposeful distortion are threatening her four-decade livelihood.

On one side, we have a president who feels his image has been mangled worse than a calf in a branding chute. On the other hand, an artist whose brush strokes are now under more scrutiny than a hanging chad in Florida.

In a nation founded on the principle that all men are created equal, how do we reconcile the power of the presidential image with the freedom of artistic expression?

A new artist from Arizona has been tapped to create a fresh likeness. Meanwhile, the Colorado Capitol Building Advisory Committee, led by former state Sen. Lois Court, is taking a measured approach, promising a “thorough discussion about all the presidential portraits.”

This tale of canvas and controversy reminds us that in America, even the walls of our statehouses can become battlegrounds for the soul of our democracy. The stakes couldn’t be higher. After all, how we choose to remember our leaders says as much about us as it does about them.
