Columbia Hit With $221M Blow in Trump Admin Legal Showdown

Columbia University has reached a significant agreement with the Trump administration, ending a period of federal scrutiny and financial uncertainty for the institution.

Columbia will pay $221 million to settle allegations of civil rights violations and discriminatory practices. This includes $200 million to the U.S. government and $21 million for a claims fund benefiting Jewish employees who faced discrimination during recent campus unrest.

The settlement follows the administration’s withdrawal of approximately $400 million in federal grants four months ago. Reports indicate that most of these funds will now be restored to the university.

Columbia has agreed to several key changes in its policies and practices. These include ending programs that discriminate against faculty or students, creating positions to broaden intellectual diversity, and enhancing security measures to prevent disruptive demonstrations in academic spaces.

The university will now more closely vet foreign applicants and share relevant data with the federal government. Disciplinary matters for visa holders will be reported as part of the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.

Columbia’s regional programs, including those focused on Middle Eastern studies, will undergo review to ensure balanced perspectives. The university has also committed to complying with Title IX and no longer forcing women to compete with biological men in sports or use their locker rooms, housing, or other facilities.

Columbia’s acting President Claire Shipman stated that the agreement protects the university’s values and independence while allowing federal research partnerships to resume. The Trump administration views this as a step toward addressing concerns about antisemitism and discriminatory practices on campuses.

This development raises important questions about the ongoing scrutiny of other institutions, including Harvard University, which is currently engaged in legal action over similar issues.
