Could DOGE Cuts Eat SpaceX’s Bottom Line?

President Donald Trump has been hinting at terminating some government contracts belonging to Elon Musk’s enterprises. However, most contracts linked with SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company, are believed to be too crucial to undergo Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cutbacks.

The Trump administration has been reported to conduct a review of Musk’s billions of government contracts, considering them as potential areas for DOGE to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse. According to reliable sources, most of SpaceX’s contracts with the Defense Department and NASA were deemed too critical to be cut off.

SpaceX, an industry trailblazer in rockets, satellites, and space travel, has over $20 billion in federal contracts. The significance of this should not be overlooked. Nevertheless, certain contracts remain under scrutiny, according to sources.

This development follows earlier reports that President Trump’s disagreements with Musk began with a post on Truth Social on June 5. The President threatened to “terminate” government contracts with Musk over their public disagreement regarding government spending.

Following this, the General Services Administration’s Josh Gruenbaum, commissioner for the Federal Acquisition Service, requested an outline of all SpaceX contracts and transactions. Gruenbaum also sought similar information about SpaceX contracts with NASA and other federal agencies.

Amid these investigations, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell reportedly met with White House officials. This is not the first time Musk has clashed with the U.S government, making him one of the world’s wealthiest individuals.

While SpaceX is a dominant provider of space services to the U.S., it also operates in coordination with rivals at times. Shotwell informed an investor event last November that SpaceX secures its government’s trust and contracts through effective execution and offering competitive prices.

Even as Musk received scrutiny from the White House, SpaceX secured a $5.9 billion contract for national-security flights in April and launched an upgraded GPS satellite for the Space Force in May. Currently, SpaceX is preparing to send a new crew to the International Space Station.

In addition to space travel, SpaceX is a global leader in communications, providing Starlink and Starshield services to the U.S. government, along with a major classified spy satellite project.

The facts suggest that while SpaceX’s government contracts are under scrutiny, the company continues to be a vital player in America’s space and communication sectors.
