Former President Donald Trump on Friday publicly criticized the Federal Reserve and its chairman, Jerome Powell, accusing them of ‘choking out the housing market’ with high interest rates, thus posing challenges for Americans, particularly young adults, to procure homes.
The remarks were delivered through a post on Trump’s preferred social media platform, Truth Social. In his statements, Trump referred to Chairman Powell by the derogatory moniker, ‘Too Late’, an allusion to Powell’s perceived reluctance to lower interest rates. He additionally expressed regret about his decision to appoint Powell, labeling it ‘truly one of my worst appointments, and criticized President Joe Biden’s recent decision to reappoint Powell for another term.
Powell, initially appointed by Trump in 2017 for a term scheduled to conclude in 2026, has been subject to repeated demands from the former president for his resignation. Despite this, Trump indicated on Wednesday that his dismissal of Powell is ‘highly unlikely’.
According to The New York Times, during a meeting with a group of House Republicans in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump displayed a draft letter intended for Powell’s dismissal, soliciting opinions from the attending lawmakers on whether he should proceed. The former president later confirmed he had solicited the lawmakers’ opinion, yet revealed he had no immediate plans to depose Powell.
Trump’s public critique of the Federal Reserve and its chairman reveals his continued engagement with national economic issues, despite his departure from the presidency. It also raises important questions about the independence of the Federal Reserve, a bedrock of our democratic institutions.
