‘No Arrest Quotas,’ Says DOJ Lawyer, But Do ICE Raids Tell Another Tale?

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have not been instructed to meet a daily quota for arrests or deportations, according to a court filing by a Trump administration attorney. This statement contradicts recent media reports suggesting such a mandate.

Department of Justice attorney Yaakov Roth, in a letter filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, stated unequivocally, “neither ICE leadership nor its field offices have been directed to meet any numerical quota or target for arrests, detentions, removals, or any operational activities that ICE or its components undertake in enforcing federal immigration law.”

A media report suggested that ICE had a goal of 3,000 arrests per day, a figure allegedly provided by White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Roth, however, insisted that while the quotation may be accurate, no such goal has been set as a matter of policy, and no directive has been issued by the Department of Homeland Security or ICE.

Roth’s filing came in the wake of a query from three federal appeals court judges, all appointed by Democrats, seeking clarity on whether the Trump administration has an official policy mandating the daily arrests of 3,000 migrants.

In the same vein, Roth is appealing a Los Angeles federal judge’s ruling, which found ICE activities conducted without reasonable suspicion to be unlawful. He argued that the ICE patrols were lawful, carefully targeted, and conducted with probable cause to make arrests.

Reports indicate that the members of the three-judge appeals panel expressed concern about the “large number” of arrests. Consequently, Judge Ronald Gould has ordered Roth to determine the origin of the daily arrest figure and submit his findings to the court.

The significance of this should not be overlooked. The public’s right to accurate and truthful information continues to be paramount in understanding the complex issue of immigration enforcement.
