Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., on Wednesday, made a significant alteration to the status of COVID-19 vaccines. Both the emergency use authorizations and the FDA’s broader authorization of the shots have been rescinded. The vaccines are now only cleared for individuals at higher risk of severe illness.
In a message disseminated on X, Kennedy Jr. highlighted four objectives he had pledged to fulfill: to terminate COVID-19 vaccine mandates, to continue access to vaccines for those who desire them, especially the vulnerable, to compel companies to conduct placebo-controlled trials, and to put an end to the emergency.
Kennedy Jr. further noted: ‘In a series of FDA actions today, we accomplished all four goals. The emergency use authorizations for COVID-19 vaccines, once used to justify broad mandates on the general public during the Biden administration, are now rescinded.’
The FDA has now issued marketing authorization for those at higher risk with specific vaccines: Moderna (6+ months), Pfizer (5+), and Novavax (12+). These vaccines are available for all patients who choose them after consulting with their doctors.
