The Secret Service has put up a roadblock in the path of former Director Kimberly Cheatle’s bid to renew her top-tier security clearance, according to a report by Real Clear Politics.
This development came on the heels of questions raised about opposition from Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., to Cheatle’s clearance renewal. The Senator’s pushback followed a failed assassination attempt on President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last year, a turbulent event that cast a long shadow on Cheatle’s career.
“Following the security debacle in Butler, the former director of USSS made the right decision to resign,” Johnson told RCP. “I see no reason for her security clearance to be reinstated.”
The Secret Service, led by Trump’s appointee, current Director Sean Curran, has been assembling a proactive team aiming to reshape the agency’s future. Additionally, Director Curran has been modernizing the intelligence apparatus within the agency.
During his tenure, Curran has decided that not every former director needs their clearances renewed, according to a Secret Service spokesman.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. The tension between preserving our national security and the politics of the time is as old as the Republic itself. A seemingly simple clearance renewal has turned into a political whirlwind, reminding us once again that in the corridors of power, seldom is anything as simple as it seems.
As we look into the rearview mirror of this incident, we’re reminded of the importance of the decisions made behind closed doors in Washington. And we’re left with one enduring question: How do these choices impact the security of ordinary Americans?
