Former Vice President Kamala Harris is now under the protection of a security detail comprising Los Angeles city police officers, as reported by local news outlet KTTV. This development follows the conclusion of her extended Secret Service protection last month, which was purportedly discontinued by President Donald Trump.
Reports indicate that up to 11 officers from the LAPD Metropolitan Division have been reassigned from other duties to ensure Harris’ safety. Federal law, to understand this fully, we should note that, typically provides former vice presidents six months of protection after leaving office. However, Harris’ Secret Service coverage, which extended past these six months due to a directive from former President Joe Biden, would have concluded on July 21.

This change in Harris’ security arrangements coincides with the commencement of her multicity book tour, promoting her memoir, which discusses her 107-day presidential campaign. The campaign, the shortest in U.S. history, ended in her loss to President Trump. According to reliable sources, specifically the Los Angeles Times, the California Highway Patrol had also proposed providing security, pending approval from Gov. Gavin Newsom.
LA Mayor Karen Bass spoke to KTTV, describing the cessation of Harris’ Secret Service protection as an act of revenge by President Trump. In a similar vein, in March, Trump terminated Secret Service protection for the adult children of former President Joe Biden. The Secret Service released a statement acknowledging this decision and confirming their compliance with the directive.
The significance of this should not be overlooked. The termination of Secret Service protection for former vice presidents and their families, along with the subsequent reliance on local law enforcement, raises important questions about the security of those who have served in our nation’s highest offices.
