South Carolina Lt. Gov. Evette Targets ‘Never Trump’ Rep. Mace With Stinging Ad

South Carolina’s Lieutenant Governor, Pamela Evette, recently launched a new advertisement in her gubernatorial campaign, taking a political swing at fellow Republican, Representative Nancy Mace. The two are currently contending for the GOP nomination in the Palmetto State governor’s race.

The advertisement, released on Tuesday, is titled ‘Never Trump Nancy’. It features snippets from a past interview in which Representative Mace expressed doubt about former President Donald Trump’s future in the Republican Party. Additional clips show Trump referring to the congresswoman as ‘Crazy Nancy Mace’, emphasizing her 2021 fundraiser for former Representative Liz Cheney and her vote certifying President Joe Biden’s 2020 electoral victory.

It seems Representative Mace, originally a Trump critic, evolved into one of his ardent supporters, dubbing herself ‘Trump in heels’ on the campaign trail. This latest development follows an earlier report of a $1 million multimedia ad purchase by the Evette campaign, which showcased the Lieutenant Governor’s association with the former president.

The significance becomes clear when we consider the upcoming primary election set to replace the term-limited Republican Governor, Henry McMaster. Five GOP contenders are in the running for Trump’s endorsement in South Carolina. In November, Trump carried the state by nearly 18 points.

A South Carolina Policy Council poll in late July demonstrated Representative Mace leading the primary field with 16% voter support among self-identified Republicans. Trailing closely was State Attorney General Alan Wilson with 15% support, followed by Lieutenant Governor Evette with 8%. Republican State Senator Josh Kimbrell garnered 3% backing. However, the poll indicated that a significant majority of voters, 52% remained undecided, suggesting a substantial opportunity for candidates to gain further support before the June 9 primary.

This raises important questions about the direction of the Republican Party and its voters in South Carolina.
