President Donald Trump this week shared an image of himself as a war-movie character, insinuating an impending increase in immigration enforcement actions in Chicago. His message was cryptic, invoking an adapted line from the 1979 film “Apocalypse Now” and referring to the Department of Homeland Security as the ‘Department of War.’
The administration is preparing to dispatch at least 300 federal agents from multiple agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to the Great Lakes Naval Base in North Chicago, Illinois. According to reliable sources, this mobilization is part of enhanced immigration enforcement operations slated to commence this weekend.

National Guard units will not be stationed inside Chicago, but a number of other states are reinforcing federal operations. Indiana, for example, is expected to call up dozens of its National Guard members to assist with immigration enforcement efforts across the state. Approximately 50 members are expected to deploy by mid-September. However, a state spokesperson clarified that these troops will not engage directly in enforcement but rather handle “administrative logistics and support tasks.”
Louisiana has embarked on a similar initiative, mobilizing almost 100 members of its National Guard for administrative duties related to immigration enforcement. Vice President JD Vance was recently asked whether National Guard troops could be sent to Chicago to address crime or immigration issues. He stated that there were “no immediate plans,” but affirmed that Trump is prepared to act decisively if required. “The president has said he has the legal authority to protect American citizens, whether that’s in Chicago or Washington, D.C.,” Vance said.
This raises important questions about the potential role of the National Guard in immigration enforcement and the implications for Chicago and other cities.
