The Department of Homeland Security issued a scathing rebuke Tuesday after four House Democrats met with a criminal illegal immigrant at an ICE detention facility, accusing the lawmakers of prioritizing foreign criminals over American citizens.
Representatives Juan Vargas, Mike Levin, Sara Jacobs, and Scott Peters, all California Democrats, visited the ICE San Diego Field Office on Monday where they spoke with a Honduran national facing charges of kidnapping and domestic abuse against his spouse. The facts here are straightforward: four elected members of Congress conducted what they termed an “oversight visit” and ended up meeting with an alleged violent criminal who should not have been in this country in the first place.
“Democrats once again chose to stand with a criminal illegal alien over American citizens,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated. “This criminal illegal alien these Democrat lawmakers met with has been charged with kidnapping and domestic abuse.”
Now, the Democrats’ defense is worth examining because it reveals the fundamental disconnect between their rhetoric and reality. Peters’ office claimed the lawmakers did not specifically request to speak with this particular detainee, asserting instead that they asked to speak with “any detainee” during their oversight visit and were simply brought to this individual. Furthermore, they argued that DHS did not present evidence of conviction for these crimes.
Let us address this defense with the logical scrutiny it deserves. First, the distinction between being charged and being convicted is technically accurate but practically irrelevant to the broader point. This individual is in ICE detention precisely because he represents a threat. The charges are serious, violent crimes. Second, if the members truly requested to speak with “any detainee,” they received exactly what they asked for and then proceeded to conduct that meeting. They had every opportunity to decline once informed of the charges.
The larger issue transcends this single incident. This represents a pattern of Democratic lawmakers treating immigration enforcement as the enemy rather than as a necessary function of a sovereign nation. These are the same politicians who have consistently opposed meaningful border security measures, voted against increased ICE funding, and characterized immigration enforcement as inherently cruel.
The American people deserve better. They deserve elected officials who recognize that immigration laws exist for legitimate reasons, including public safety. When an illegal immigrant is charged with kidnapping and domestic abuse, the appropriate response from lawmakers should be supporting the deportation process, not conducting sympathetic visits that provide political cover for opposing enforcement.
The timing of this incident is particularly noteworthy given the current administration’s efforts to restore order to the immigration system after years of chaos. DHS has been working to remove dangerous criminals from American communities, and these efforts deserve support, not obstruction disguised as oversight.
These four California Democrats represent districts that have experienced firsthand the consequences of failed immigration policies. Their constituents include American citizens who have been victims of crimes committed by individuals who should never have been in the country. Yet their elected representatives chose to spend their time meeting with an accused kidnapper and domestic abuser.
The choice could not be clearer, and the priorities could not be more obvious.
