Rubio Announces Terrorist Designations for Anti-American Antifa Networks in Europe

The Trump administration took decisive action Thursday against violent leftist extremism abroad, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio announcing that four European radical groups have been designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

Let’s be clear about what this means. These are not peaceful protesters. These are not activists exercising their right to free speech. These are militant organizations that have carried out bombings, threatened violence against government institutions, and targeted individuals for their political beliefs. The evidence speaks for itself.

The designated groups include Antifa Ost (also known as Antifa East and Hammerbande) in Germany, the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front in Italy, and two Greek organizations: Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense. Each has a documented history of violence that would make any rational person question why this designation did not come sooner.

Consider the facts. Antifa Ost spent five years, from 2018 to 2023, attacking right-wing figures in Germany. They then expanded their operations internationally, conducting attacks in Budapest in February 2023. Hungary recognized reality and labeled them a terrorist network in September 2025. The United States is simply catching up.

The Italian group has been even more prolific in its violence. Since 2003, the Informal Anarchist Federation has claimed responsibility for threats, bombs, and letter bombs targeting political and economic institutions. Their targets have included courthouses and what they term “capitalist institutions,” which apparently means any business or government entity that does not conform to their anarchist ideology.

The Greek organizations have been equally brazen. Revolutionary Class Self-Defense has taken credit for improvised explosive device attacks against the Greek Ministry of Labor and Hellenic Train offices. These are not symbolic gestures. These are actual bombings designed to intimidate, harm, and destroy.

Rubio made the administration’s position unmistakably clear. “The United States will continue using all available tools to protect our nation from these anti-American, anti-capitalist, and anti-Christian terrorist groups,” he stated. This is not merely about foreign policy. This is about recognizing that violent leftist extremism poses a genuine threat to Western civilization and American interests.

The practical implications of these designations are significant. Individuals belonging to these organizations will lose access to the American financial system. Any property they hold in the United States will be frozen. This is how you combat terrorism: you cut off the money supply and isolate the perpetrators from the international community.

Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri, who has been vocal about the threat of leftist violence, praised the move. His gratitude to Secretary Rubio and the Trump administration for “holding these radical groups who enable, fund, and support political violence in the United States and across the world accountable” reflects a broader conservative recognition that political violence from the left has been downplayed for far too long.

The designation builds on President Trump’s commitment to confronting Antifa’s campaign of political violence. For years, mainstream voices dismissed concerns about Antifa as exaggerated or nonexistent. Yet here we have documented evidence of organized, international networks carrying out bombings and attacks against democratic institutions and private citizens.

This is what actual terrorism looks like. Not peaceful protest. Not civil disobedience. Terrorism. And it is about time the United States government called it what it is and responded accordingly.
