Former Vice President Kamala Harris has made clear what matters most to her following her devastating 2024 presidential defeat: not the future of the Democratic Party, not another White House run, but rather a marble bust of herself in the Capitol.
In a recent interview, the 61-year-old Harris brushed aside questions about whether she plans to seek the presidency again in 2028, instead pivoting to discuss her “historic figure” status and the ceremonial sculpture that will eventually join the Capitol’s collection of vice presidential busts.
“It’s three years from now,” Harris said when pressed about 2028. “I mean, honestly.” She continued: “I understand the focus on ’28 and all that. But there will be a marble bust of me in Congress. I am a historic figure like any vice president of the United States ever was.”
Let us be clear about the facts here. Harris is technically correct that she will receive a marble bust, as this is standard protocol for all vice presidents. The U.S. Senate maintains a collection of these busts pursuant to chamber rules, which authorize the Architect of the Capitol to commission and display sculptures of former vice presidents throughout the Senate wing. Currently, one bust sits in the vice president’s formal office, twenty occupy niches in the Senate Chamber gallery walls, and others line the second-floor corridors adjacent to the chamber.
The busts of former Vice Presidents Joe Biden and Mike Pence are currently in progress, as is Harris’s. Vice President JD Vance will have his commissioned upon leaving office, continuing this long-standing tradition.
But here is what Harris conveniently ignores: receiving a ceremonial bust is not an accomplishment. It is a participation trophy for having held office. Every vice president receives one, regardless of their effectiveness, popularity, or political success. This is akin to bragging about receiving a diploma simply for graduating rather than discussing what one actually learned or achieved.
The Democratic Party currently finds itself in disarray, lacking clear leadership and direction following significant electoral losses. Rather than stepping up to provide that leadership or engaging in serious introspection about why voters rejected her candidacy so decisively, Harris has chosen to embark on a book tour promoting her memoir, “107 Days.”
“Thousands of people are coming to hear my voice. Thousands and thousands,” Harris told reporters. “Every place we’ve gone has been sold out.”
Again, let us examine the logic here. Selling out book tour venues does not translate to electoral viability. Many failed politicians have written successful books. The question is not whether people will pay to hear Harris speak in a controlled environment, but whether voters will actually cast ballots for her in a competitive election. The 2024 results answered that question definitively.
Harris’s focus on legacy rather than leadership reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of her political moment. The Democratic Party needs serious policy recalibration and honest assessment of why it lost significant ground with working-class voters, minority communities, and swing-state Americans. Instead, their most recent standard-bearer is discussing marble busts and book sales.
This is not leadership. This is narcissism masquerading as historical reflection. The American people deserve better from those who seek the highest offices in the land.
