Senate Republicans are moving forward with an investigation into former President Joe Biden’s immigration parole programs following the shooting of two National Guard members allegedly by an Afghan national who entered the United States under Biden’s watch.

Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri will lead a hearing examining the Biden administration’s parole policies on December 16. The investigation comes after U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, was wounded and U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed in an attack allegedly carried out by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan man admitted to the country through Biden’s Operation Allies Welcome program in 2021.

The facts here are straightforward and damning. Operation Allies Welcome was hastily implemented during Biden’s catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan, a debacle that resulted in the Taliban retaking control of the country after two decades of American military presence. The program was designed to resettle Afghans who allegedly worked alongside American forces, but the vetting process was clearly inadequate.

According to the Department of Homeland Security’s own documentation from the Biden administration, the program aimed to coordinate the resettlement of “vulnerable Afghans” who worked with American forces. The problem is not the stated intention but the execution. When you prioritize speed over security, Americans die. This is not complicated.

Senator Cornyn, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Border Security and Immigration, has been sounding the alarm on these policies for years. His warnings were not heeded, and now a 20-year-old servicewoman is dead. Cornyn stated that Biden’s failed immigration parole programs represent the greatest stain on his legacy, noting that the former president repeatedly abused these programs to admit hundreds of thousands of unvetted illegal aliens and potential terrorists into the United States.

The logic here is simple. If you cannot properly vet individuals coming from a nation that just fell to the Taliban, you should not be admitting them into the country at scale. National security is not a secondary concern. It is the primary responsibility of the federal government.

The Biden administration’s approach to immigration has been characterized by ideological commitment to open borders rather than pragmatic concern for American safety. Operation Allies Welcome is merely one example of this pattern. The administration prioritized optics over outcomes, rushing to demonstrate compassion without ensuring that compassion would not come at the cost of American lives.

The upcoming hearing will examine the specific failures that allowed Lakanwal into the country. Republicans are demanding answers about the vetting procedures, or lack thereof, that were employed during the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal. They want to know who made the decisions, what warnings were ignored, and how many other potentially dangerous individuals were admitted under similar circumstances.

This investigation is necessary not only for accountability but for preventing future tragedies. If the vetting system failed in this case, it likely failed in others. The American people deserve to know the extent of the problem and what measures will be implemented to ensure that those charged with protecting our borders actually do so.

The death of Specialist Beckstrom is a tragedy that was entirely preventable. When immigration policy is driven by political considerations rather than security imperatives, Americans pay the price.
