Border czar Tom Homan revealed Tuesday that immigration officer Jonathan Ross has been forced into hiding with his family following an overwhelming number of death threats in the wake of last week’s fatal shooting of anti-ICE activist Renee Good.
The facts matter here, and they are being deliberately obscured by the left’s reflexive demonization of immigration enforcement.
According to Homan, Ross will remain in hiding until the investigation concludes and the actual facts emerge. At that point, the officer may pursue defamation lawsuits against those who have mischaracterized the incident.
“I think he’s going to wait for this investigation to play itself out and wait for them to come out with actual facts, what happened,” Homan stated. “Then, I think you may see him take action because I know for a fact, you know, now he has to be in hiding.”
When pressed directly about whether Ross was currently in hiding, Homan confirmed the situation. “Yes, for the safety of him and his family. I mean, there are wanted posters with his picture, his license plate number, you know, and the death threats against him and his family.”
Neighbors reported seeing people packing boxes at Ross’s residence late last week. Some neighbors have reportedly left the area temporarily while the controversy continues.
Here is what actually happened last week: Good, a 37-year-old activist, deliberately blocked a Minneapolis street with her vehicle and antagonized immigration officials who were conducting their lawful duties. She held federal officers up for several minutes. When agents requested she exit her vehicle, Good instead backed up and then pulled forward in Ross’s direction. After her car struck him, Ross fired the fatal shot.
These are the facts as currently understood. Yet Democratic politicians have seized upon the incident to attack President Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda rather than wait for the complete investigation.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz exemplifies this irresponsible approach. He warned of a brewing “civil war” following the shooting and last year compared Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to Nazi gestapo. This kind of inflammatory rhetoric has consequences.
Those consequences are now manifesting in violent threats against law enforcement officers and administration officials. Recent protests in Manhattan featured activists chanting “Save a life, kill an ICE” and “Kristi Noem will hang.” These are not peaceful demonstrations. These are incitements to violence.
The pattern is clear and disturbing. The left has created an environment where federal officers performing their constitutional duties face not just criticism but actual threats to their lives and families. An immigration officer who appears to have defended himself against a vehicle being used as a weapon now cannot safely remain in his own home.
This represents a fundamental breakdown in the rule of law. Americans can disagree about immigration policy through democratic processes. What they cannot do is threaten violence against federal officers, create wanted posters, and force law enforcement families into hiding.
The investigation will determine the full facts of what occurred. Until then, the presumption should favor the officer who was struck by a vehicle while performing his duties, not the activist who deliberately obstructed federal law enforcement.
The threats against Ross and his family demonstrate precisely why strong immigration enforcement is necessary and why the Trump administration’s approach is correct. A nation that cannot protect its borders or its border enforcement officers is not a nation at all.
