Bruce Springsteen announced a new tour this week, and predictably, the 76-year-old musician could not resist turning what should be a simple concert announcement into yet another overwrought political sermon about the supposed demise of American democracy.
The “Born to Run” singer revealed that he and the E Street Band will embark on a three-month “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour this spring, hitting cities from Minneapolis to California to Texas to Washington. But rather than simply promoting his music, Springsteen felt compelled to frame the entire endeavor as a resistance movement against what he called “our wannabe king and his rouge government.”
Let us address the facts here. First, Springsteen apparently meant “rogue,” not “rouge,” which is makeup. Perhaps someone on his team should have proofread the script before recording.
Second, and more importantly, the characterization of President Trump as a “wannabe king” fundamentally misunderstands how constitutional governance works. Trump was elected by the American people through the constitutional process. He is implementing policies that he explicitly campaigned on, policies that voters knew about when they cast their ballots. That is not monarchy. That is representative democracy functioning exactly as designed.
Springsteen claimed that “American democracy, American freedom, our American constitution, and our sacred American dream” are all “under attack.” This is the same tired rhetoric the left has deployed since 2016. What Springsteen actually opposes is not an attack on democracy but rather the enforcement of existing immigration law, which every president is constitutionally obligated to execute faithfully.
The singer joins a growing chorus of wealthy celebrities who have spent recent weeks issuing increasingly unhinged statements about the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts. Breaking Bad actor Giancarlo Esposito recently called for a “revolution” to combat ICE operations. Actress Molly Ringwald declared the Trump administration “a fascist government” and suggested that Americans supporting current immigration policies could eventually face treason charges when Democrats regain power.
This last point deserves particular attention. Ringwald’s statement essentially threatens political opponents with future prosecution based on their current policy positions. That is authoritarian thinking, yet these same individuals accuse Trump of fascism without apparent irony.
Springsteen insisted that “everyone, regardless of where you stand or what you believe in, is welcome” at his concerts. This rings hollow when the entire tour premise rests on demonizing roughly half the country as supporters of a “wannabe king.” Telling conservatives they are welcome while simultaneously characterizing their political preferences as an existential threat to America is not inclusivity. It is condescension wrapped in performative tolerance.
The reality is this: Springsteen has every right to express his political views and organize his tour however he wishes. Americans have every right to attend or boycott accordingly. But let us be clear about what this represents. This is not brave resistance. This is a multimillionaire rock star leveraging his platform to oppose the democratically elected government while claiming to defend democracy. The irony appears lost on him.
American democracy is not under attack because voters elected a president who enforces immigration law. What we are witnessing is simply the left’s continued inability to accept electoral outcomes they dislike.
