Riverside County Sheriff Abandons Law and Order Platform With Amnesty Proposal

Let’s get straight to the facts here. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, running as a Republican for governor of California, has announced he would support a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal aliens currently in the United States. This represents a fundamental betrayal of conservative immigration principles and the rule of law itself.

During recent interviews, Bianco laid out his position with remarkable clarity. He wants to provide naturalized American citizenship to millions of people who violated federal immigration law to enter this country, with the sole caveat being that they have not been convicted of a crime. He even promised to personally lobby President Trump and congressional Republicans to pass such an amnesty.

The logic Bianco employs is deeply flawed. He invokes his own family’s immigration from Italy, claiming that historical immigration patterns justify current amnesty proposals. But here is what Bianco conveniently ignores: his ancestors came here legally. They followed the established rules. They waited their turn. They respected American sovereignty and the American legal system from day one.

There exists a monumental difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. Legal immigrants respect our laws before they even set foot on American soil. Illegal aliens, by definition, begin their relationship with America by breaking our laws. This is not a minor distinction. This is the entire ballgame.

Bianco argues that people come here for jobs and work hard to provide for their families. Nobody disputes that many illegal aliens work hard. But hard work does not retroactively legitimize illegal entry. Millions of people worldwide work hard and want to come to America through legal channels. They wait years, sometimes decades, following the rules. What message does amnesty send to them? That they were suckers for following the law?

The sheriff’s position becomes even more problematic when examined through the lens of law enforcement. Bianco built his reputation as a tough-on-crime sheriff who stood up to California’s progressive establishment. Now he wants to reward millions of people whose very presence in this country constitutes an ongoing violation of federal law. This represents an incoherent position for someone whose entire career has supposedly been dedicated to upholding the law.

Furthermore, the political calculation here defies logic. California Republicans have struggled for years precisely because they have failed to differentiate themselves sufficiently from Democrats on key issues. Bianco apparently believes that mimicking Democratic immigration policies will somehow win over voters in a state that has lurched leftward. This strategy has failed repeatedly.

The conservative position on immigration remains clear and principled. Secure the border. Enforce existing laws. Welcome legal immigrants who follow proper procedures. Reject amnesty proposals that reward illegal behavior and encourage future violations. Create a merit-based immigration system that serves American interests.

Bianco’s amnesty proposal fails every one of these tests. It rewards illegal behavior, encourages future illegal immigration, and abandons the rule of law. Republican voters in California deserve better than a candidate who campaigns on conservative credentials while proposing policies indistinguishable from progressive Democrats.

The question now becomes whether California Republicans will hold Bianco accountable for this position or whether they will once again compromise their principles in a misguided attempt to win elections by becoming Democrat-lite. History suggests the latter strategy leads nowhere except to continued irrelevance.
