## When They Tell You Who They Are, Believe Them

Rep. Ilhan Omar just gave us a masterclass in accidental honesty. At a townhall meeting this week, the Minnesota congresswoman didn’t just rehash the tired “abolish ICE” talking point we’ve heard Democrats mumble about for years. No, she went further. Much further.

She told her audience that Democrats are actively planning how to dismantle the entire Department of Homeland Security.

Let that sink in for a second. We’re not talking about reform or restructuring. We’re talking about taking apart the federal agency responsible for protecting 330 million Americans from terrorist threats, cyberattacks, and yes, illegal immigration. The whole thing. Gone.

“What I will say is that there is an easier conversation happening today than six, seven years ago when I got to Congress, about what we need to do with ICE, which is to abolish it,” Omar said, like she was discussing menu options at brunch. Then came the kicker: “There is a lot of conversation about what the dismantlement of the Department of Homeland Security should look like.”

The dismantlement. Not the improvement. Not the modernization. The dismantlement.

## This Isn’t About Immigration Anymore

Here’s what should worry every American, regardless of where you stand on border policy. DHS isn’t just about ICE or border patrol. It oversees the Secret Service, the Coast Guard, FEMA, the TSA, and our cybersecurity infrastructure. It coordinates responses to natural disasters. It protects our elections from foreign interference.

You know what happens when you dismantle that? Chaos. Vulnerability. A security vacuum that our enemies will exploit faster than you can say “national security threat.”

But Omar and her progressive colleagues don’t seem bothered by these details. They’re too busy stoking resistance against what they call “raids” but what the rest of us recognize as routine law enforcement operations. Even Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has jumped on this bandwagon, framing ICE arrests of criminal illegal immigrants as some kind of authoritarian overreach.

It’s stunning, really. The same people who wanted to expand federal power during COVID now want to tear down the agency that keeps us safe from actual threats.

## The Shift Nobody Asked For

Omar’s right about one thing. The conversation has shifted. Six or seven years ago, “abolish ICE” was fringe nonsense that serious Democrats distanced themselves from. Now it’s mainstream progressive orthodoxy. And apparently, they’ve moved the goalposts even further while we weren’t looking.

This is what happens when political movements prioritize ideology over reality. When feelings trump facts. When signaling virtue to your base matters more than protecting your country.

The irony is rich. These are the same politicians who lecture us about threats to democracy, about the importance of institutions, about preserving norms. But when it comes to an institution created specifically to protect Americans after 9/11, suddenly it’s expendable.

DHS was born from tragedy. From the recognition that our security apparatus needed coordination and focus. It wasn’t perfect then and it isn’t perfect now. But the solution to imperfection isn’t destruction.

## What Comes Next

Omar’s comments aren’t just campaign rhetoric or red meat for the base. They’re a preview of what Democrats will push if they consolidate power. They’re telling us their plans. We should listen.

The question isn’t whether these ideas are popular. Most Americans, even those who want immigration reform, don’t want to dismantle homeland security. The question is whether voters will pay attention before it’s too late.

Because once you tear down these institutions, rebuilding them after the inevitable disaster becomes exponentially harder. Just ask anyone who’s watched cities defund their police departments and then beg officers to come back.

This is the Left’s playbook. Tear it down first. Figure out the consequences later. And when things go sideways, blame someone else.

We deserve better than this reckless gamble with our security.
